The Toshiba 46SV685DB is at the top of Toshiba’s TV ranges. And so it should be with a price higher than many would be prepared to pay for a television. So what do you get for your money and is it worth it?
What sets the 46SV685DB apart is Toshiba’s first use of LED (light emitting diodes) to provide backlighting to the screen. The advantage of LEDs over traditional backlighting is that they are independently controlled, allowing very localised bright and dark sections. The blacks are blacker and the whites whiter than on other LCD sets. The LEDs also react quicker to a fast moving picture, making action movies and sports look much better.
And the performance of the Toshiba 46SV685DB screen is very impressive indeed. We’re not generally used to seeing really deep blacks on television screens. So its quite a surprise when you see almost perfet blacks on the screen of the 46SV685DB for the first time.
This is particularly stunning on HDTV content from sources such as a BluRay player, or the increasing number of TV programmes. But with Resolution+ feature, the improvement in the contrast and depth of non HD pictures is remarkable as well. Details that none of us picked up on feature films we’ve watched in the past come to life on the Toshiba 46SV685DB’s screen.
The downside to the LEDs being placed behind the screen is that it is not as super-slim as some sets – its around 100 mm deep. Still reasonable though. And the flipside to this is that there is more room for speakers – a common weak point in thin flat screen TVs. The sound on the Toshiba 46SV685DB is much better than on its competitors, with a more dynamic powerful range.
Toshiba’s renowned light sensor feature known as Auto View is included in the Toshiba 46SV685DB. Information on the external lighting and the screen brightness is analysed. The ambient light sensor constantly adjusts the LCD’s back light depending on the lighting condition in the room to provide a better viewing experience. In light rooms backlight is increased in dark rooms backlight is dimmed.
The 46SV685DB also has a power button that switches the set off completely – not a common feature on sets for many years now.
To summarise our review, the Toshiba 46SV685DB lives up to the expectations that come with its price tag. If you want a top of the range set with stunning pictures that has reasonable sound output without the necessity of a separate surround sound system, we think that the Toshiba 46SV685DB should be on your shortlist.
